Kansas Hunt Week

Six days of hunting, three packs, four fixtures!

This year’s Kansas Hunt Week features the Flint Hills Hunt, Fort Leavenworth Hunt, and the Juan Tomás Hounds. We will start and end the week at the FLH fixture near Ft. Leavenworth. Monday through Friday we will be in the Flint Hills. The final hunt will be FLH’s formal opening!

All hunts will be informal/ratcatcher and will start at 9am (unless weather dictates otherwise) except for the opening hunt on Saturday the 12th, which will be formal and start at 10am. (Stirrup cup and blessing of the hounds at 9/9:30.)

Welcome party and FLH Opening Hunt stirrup cup, whoopie wagon, and breakfast are included for guests. (FLH members, please register and pay for opening hunt breakfast separately.) Stirrup cups and whoopie wagons will be available at other hunts depending on availability of “ground support.”

**NOTE: If you are a guest and plan to attend opening hunt as a cartopper rather than mounted, please note that in the comments area. If you will be unmounted for any of the Hunt Week hunts and are interested in helping with a stirrup cup or whoopie wagon, please contact Missy Hill via email or at 509-954-6051.**

McGuire's Fixture

Fort Leavenworth Hunt’s McGuire’s fixture is located at 251st and Bayle Road in Easton, KS (about 25 minutes away from Fort Leavenworth, where the FLH hounds reside). The terrain includes open fields, wooded areas, stream crossings, a few steep hills, and plenty of coops. We will have four fields (first, second, hilltop, and walk-trot). There is a “clubhouse” with seating and refrigerators of cold beverages and a portable toilet on site. Water is available and there is a dedicated area for rinsing horses. Leavenworth is the closest city for accommodations.

Flint Hills Fixtures

Our Flint Hills fixtures feature wide open spaces and rolling hills dotted with draws, ponds, and a few wooded areas. You can really see the hounds work out there! There are no coops, but you may encounter some ditches or gullies. We will have a first and second field, but with the open terrain, once hounds are on line things move fast and we cover a lot of ground, so a fit horse is a must!

We will be at our Matfield Green fixture (just outside the town of Matfield Green) on Monday. We will meet at the Casey’s at 424 N Walnut Street in Cottonwood Falls) at 7:30am and convoy from there. There are no “amenities” at this fixture, but we will have a truck with a water tank so that horses don’t go thirsty.

Tuesday and Thursday we will hunt from the north side of Division Ranch (enter via DD road from K177). We will meet up at the Flint Hills Rodeo grounds at 7:45am and convoy from there. There will be a porta-potty and truck carrying water availabe at this fixture.

Friday we will hunt from Settlers Acre (2295 280th Rd., Emploria, KS), the home of FHH huntsman Jim and Carlie Beisel. **Do NOT listen to your GPS if it tells you to take XX road. Here are simple directions: Seven miles west of I35 in Emporia take YY north. Go five miles north on YY to 280th St. Go west on 280th three miles.**

Where to Stay/Board

$&Our McGuire’s fixture is about 30 minutes from Leavenworth. Here is a list of hotels in Leavenworth. We are still compiling a list of boarding options and will add information as we get it. We do also have some FLH members with spare stalls and rooms available. Please contact Teresa for additional information.
